This was the game I cut my early gaming teeth on. I loved it and played it to death. Nostalgia keeps its rating high for me but I don't reach for it like I used to. Once exposed to a larger smorgasbord of games, Acquire feels a bit dated. I'm not fond of the memory element of trying to remember who is buying which stock. That said however, I wouldn't turn it down if that's what a group wanted to play.

I don't dislike this game but I do have a couple of issues with it. If you're late in the turn order at the beginning, you can quickly find yourself in a heap of hurt depending on what villages you need to complete. Regardless I like the variable turn order (El Grande), the hidden 'route' card (Ticket to Ride), the exploration theme (Tikal), and the set collection mechanics (Tikal)...especially when it's wrapped up with nice bits.

Very fiddly managing the money and power cards, making change, swapping stones, placing farmers, etc. Seems to cause blank stares from new players until you play a few rounds. Having difficulty getting anyone in my group to play it again.

Rating after only one play. I played a 4-player game and three of us played overly conservative having one or more banners and workers left at the end. The most aggressive player won. I'm not sure that's always the best strategy unless everyone is playing conservatively. I did find that the game felt as if it moves rather slowly at first and when I thought we were hitting the midpoint of the game it was suddenly over. More plays will most likely adjust my perception of the game and my rating. Overall I did enjoy the game and feel that there are enough decisions to make to keep it interesting. I've played 2 two player games now and I'm very pleased with how the game plays with two. I can sense the end game better (more plays may have done that anyway) and I feel more in control of who will be in a dominant position when closing and/or evaluating.

Was waiting on the reprint but gave up. Bought a lightly used RGG copy on Mar 7 2010. Great game of tense card play. The rules may seem a bit opaque at first but it plays like a gateway game. Can suffer from some analysis paralysis for some though. I like the game of chicken trying to establish the bonus conditions *before* building your building but knowing that you may be telegraphing your position too strongly causing someone to trash your hopes with a park, factory, or well timed streetcar placement that bisecs your properties. Good game. It says a lot for the design if I can play oh so horribly but still want to play again.

I initially disliked this game but bought it since my game group liked it. I'm not normally one for direct trading games. As it turns out, my copy was never played and it sat for almost 2 years on my shelf. I pulled it out about 6 months ago and it's been a big hit with my family. My kids really like the trading part and it's turned into something I enjoy.

Received a complimentary version for review. Blokus-light but I don't intend that to be derogatory. In some situations, Blokus can be a bit thinky and Callisto fits the bill for those lighter "play with friends" or "play with kids" situations where you just want a semi-cerebral activity to do while interacting in other ways. I like the design of the board with the indentions to keep the tiles in place. The colors are easily distinguishable. I cannot comment on how the game appears to the color blind. Callisto gets knocks for the "ugly" board but what's to be ugly here. It works fine for me. It's an abstract, you don't get much artistic awe in that space.

This is, by far, my most favorite 3-player game. The game is easy to teach. The game provides lots of turn angst deciding how to bid for turn order, where to place your cubes, and how far to move the king. There is great player interaction by attacking and defending your collapsed territories and the random element of the die roll adds a little spice to dealing with uncertainty. The partner-based four player game is also great for parents to pair with kids in family 'grudge-match' games :-) If you have a chance to pick up this game...get it. You won't regret it.

BGG Secret Santa Gift 2009 Interesting mechanics. After reading through the rules I figured I knew what was going on but when I attempted a solo play I realized there were a lot of corner cases that were left ambiguous. Read the Rules Forum posts here on BGG for clarification. Our games have been a bit more cut throat than I was expecting the game to be. Blocking tunnels with station placement and ruining pathways with dynamite can be particularly back stabbing. I've enjoyed playing but it can be a bit thinky and AP prone. Not a lot you can do when it's not your turn.

I greatly enjoy this game. The multi-phased turn keeps everyone playing with little down time. Each game plays quite a bit differently since the order of the optional buildings and the timing of the quarry and the lawyer drastically affect the flow of the game. Less players seems to drive the provost out in front of the bailiff more often than with more players which shortens the game and gives it a less of a 'take that' feel. I've had games where delivering batches to the castle was very important and I've had others where building buildings was the path to victory. Great game that I'd play over Puerto Rico in a heartbeat. Recently pulled this out and you know...I don't think it gets much better than this. I sincerely love this game.

Won in BGG Auction: April 6, 2009 Played a couple of times. The face down mongol tiles don't add much given that most people have seen them by the time you flip them over. Might as well play with them face up to remove the memory element from the game. Nice 3D bits and the "stick" cards give it a nice touch.

Purchased new Sept 18, 2008 Played with 5. Whoa...a lot going on in this game. Good stuff but watch playing it with players that like to think a lot about their turn. Down time can be a bit of a factor. I loved every minute of the game but it did eat a big chunk out of my game day. I not fond of games with very few victory points available which usually means every point counts. Translation: as the game comes to a close it crawls to a halt while every player tries to maximize every single move, counting and recounting players positions, money, population counts, voice of the people probabilities, adjusting for new political cards being exposed, etc.

Hope it's good. Impulse buy Jan 22, 2010. Arrived Jan 25, 2010 My son and I played it right away and we both liked it. It's pretty much what you'd expect. A sort of Rumis-y kind of puzzle feel to it. I must say that the translations are somewhat of a mess. Apparently there are differences of opinion on what a move entails that didn't translate well. The designer wished a more free-form movement where people could move their climber even when it wasn't their turn. The English rules explicitly prohibit that. I think I may try a variant where a player takes an "English" turn and then it goes once around the table allowing players to move their climber (no ladders, block movement, or blocking stones allowed). Then the next player takes his "English" turn. An English turn consists of (in order) 1) optionally move a block, 2) optionally move a climber (ladders allowed), 3) optionally place a blocking stone. If you don't end up higher at the end of your "English" turn, then your turn counts as a "pass" that could trigger the end of the game.

I'm not one to normally like card-based games with lots of text but this game is really manageable. After only two plays (with the recommended 'starting play' action cards) I'm ready to start branching out. Pretty neat game and looking forward to playing with more people.

Received via BGG Trade 09/17/07 Chaotic romp but still fun. Since it's difficult to plan ahead, plays best with a lower number of players. Each turn is an exercise in maximizing position for your payout. There exists some strategic moves but in general, Dos Rios is a game of tactics. There is a level of direct confrontation when choosing to kick an opponents meeples back to the city so the take that level can be pretty intense at times. We've run into king maker endings a few times so that's somewhat troubling but it still sees the table so we're still having fun with it.

Picked up a copy at Buckeye Game Fest 2009 Whoa...what to say. I love the fixed 7 rounds that start slow and build along with the tension on what to do. It teaches easily since the first round is so short and sweet. I love the look in their eyes about how can this be good...it's silly. Then by round 2 or 3 it's clicking...rut roh...this is good. The random set up keeps it fresh. My only complains are setup time and counting points at the end is a bit of a pain but if I have to resort to complaining about that, it's that good.

Received as a Secret Santa gift 2008 After a couple of solo plays I managed to get Hamburgum to the table on May 5, 2009 (!) I was hoping for a bit deeper play than what it turned out being but maybe the depth is subtle and comes through only after a few plays. I greatly enjoyed the quick play, relatively little down time, and with three we were done very quickly. For a game with zero randomness it was not overly heady. The Rondel is great, of course, but it didn't quite hold the tension I'd hoped. I thought there'd be a bit more "should I race around quickly" or "do I have time to stop a few times on the way". I'm looking forward to many more plays and rank it highly even after just one [real] play.

Physical board smaller than expected. Bits are low to medium quality. My board is warped and doesn't lay flat. Artwork overly cartoony. But all of that is easily forgiven because the game is just so darned good. I like the programming aspect and trying to outguess your opponents moves when coming in contact with them in villages. At first it's easy to get your programming messed up just by mistake so allow a little extra time for new players to get the zen of it. End game scoring is really funky. Very difficult to explain to someone who hasn't played the game before.

Won in BGG Auction - April 26, 2009 In Shrink Played a friend's copy a few times and really had a good time playing. Negotiation games are not normally my thing but the chaos factor of the free for all and the ability to sit out and jump in to spoil the deal even if you don't think you'll make anything on it is pure genius. You've got to be in the right mood for this one. Getting repeatedly chopped out of deals and being short on cards can make for a very long game indeed.

Rare abstract offering from Knizia. Plenty of tension. Do I play offensively...or defensively. Should I swap tiles now that I can or do I try to get one more turn out of that purple that's starting to close up... arg!

Received 08/21/08 Opened and punched. Artwork is, as expected, just simply awesome. Rules are a not very functional. They fold out into a large poster so using them at the table to check rules is going to be a pain. Okay...don't expect anything deep here but it's still fun. You're always at the mercy of your cards and how the captain assigns the dice but hey...the game isn't rocket science. You just bash your way to the end and hope for the best. Obviously with more people you're going to be battling more. My one complaint is that the 'star' battle die is a killer and feels too powerful. New complaint: The box is rather thin and has already split at two corners. And I'm even very careful with my games.

It takes a few games to get used to the special power cards to the degree that you can fully grok what the card can or can't do for you by glancing at the excellently done artwork. Done get discouraged by slow play your first few games. I bought it specifically for my wife and I to play since she loves the 2-player variant of San Juan. I am not disappointed in the slightest. Great little game for two. My 9 and 11 year like it as well. Oct 15, 2008 - I've grown tired of the game. Replay value dropped quickly. Play seems mechanical and uninteresting.

Accepted Trade July 8, 2009 (for a copy of Galaxy Trucker) Arrived in excellent NIS condition. July 24, 2009 - Punched and read through the rules. Have yet to play a real game but I can't stop thinking about how I'm going to approach it when I do. I can't wait to play. New players will suffer a bit from understanding the importance of good cottage placement but with some coaching they'll see what's up pretty quickly. Law cards are powerful but they don't feel like they represent all one drives for. Great resource engine to victory points game that places pretty quickly. The rules are relatively straightforward but feel a bit awkward to explain. One round of sample play makes everything very clear.

Samurai + Mission: Red Planet An area influence game where players move and/or place various shaped pieces on a map in order to exert influence points in a region that will eventually score. Each player possesses an identical set of cards that are played one at a time and indicate what action the player can take on his turn. When a specific card is played scoring in a region occurs and everybody gets their cards back. Only the next two regions to score are known at any time. I like it but I hate it. I don't play well and I find it frustrating. But I do find it intriguing because it does scratch some itch for this type of game. I continually make the same mistake or at least find myself in the same situation in these kinds of games where I'm fighting too many battles with too many different people. You just don't have enough bits on the board to maintain dominance. I usually end up losing both territories (or worse) because I'm spread too thin. Kreta doesn't find its way to the table very often but I find myself hesitant to trade it. See my review at http://www.marquand.net/article.php?story=20061001151044943

I suggest substituting some clay poker chips. Have played numerous times with my extended family and they love it! It's not a gamers game but it is a fun poker/tichu/euchre romp that can get aunt Matilda swearing and your cousin Phil ready to punch you in the mouth. Good stuff! The cards are smaller than I was expecting and I really don't like the card-tuck style box. The artwork is nice on the merchant ships and the pirate ships but I'm a little put off by the very cartoonish pirate captains and the admiral. My wife said if she'd seen the box in the store she never would have bought it thinking it a young child's game. However, the Mensa and Dr. Toy award stickers did catch her eye and she looked at it long enough to recognize the Knizia name. The game is a light filler and plays very quickly. I've played 3 and 4 person games and it feels about the same heaviness as 6-Nimmt...maybe slightly heavier.

Christmas 2005 gift. Excellent turn angst. Great bits. I really like trying to predict what your opponents will do so that you can handle the change in the layout of houses and role cards without giving everyone gold because you had to renounce part of an action. Played only with 5 and, although fun, it seemed there were often little contention for the sweet spots. Being right before the Harbor Master seems to be an ugly place to be indeed. If you can't be HB, try to be right in front of him/her. With 5 the boats fill up fast. It still feels to be that being a pirate is too expensive for the risk with 5.

Unplayed The minis are very well done. They seem to be made of a stiffer plastic than the base game minis. The plastic also seems to be able to carry a much lighter level of fine detail. You can even see the cogs on the track wheels of the T-34s. I was slightly disappointed in the terrain tiles. I was hoping for a smoother surface light the base game but they seem to be made of a rougher cardboard which gives them a sheen when viewed at an angle in bright light.

Make sure you play with the correct stone rules. There is a misprint in the English translation. Stones are never removed from the game. You always restock the supply. My group has found the game play tense and all of us felt like we were in the hunt the entire time. Great play for us. --- time passes...dust gathers...no table time I dusted this off and my wife and I played last night. She'd never played before but we were up and rolling in about 30 minutes and it took us only about an hour to play. I was surprised at how much I'd remembered about the game even though I'd only played once or twice before. Easy to learn, easy to teach. There are a couple of fiddly things to remember like: did I remove the tribesman from the board after I delivered a token, did I move my mana limit and mana token after delivering a stone to the temple, did I take my mana at the end of the turn, etc. but that's nit picking. Good game, relatively close race, games may be highly interactive or relatively solitary endeavors...it just depends.

Can't take this game too seriously. A great opener or closer. Not that it's overly short or light; there are plenty of backstabbing opportunities as well as a fine bunch of 'take that' moves, but who wins may be more of a function of randomness rather than smart play. You certainly can play poorly but playing well by no means means you'll do well. Still...a great fun game with the right group.

Received in trade. Runs a little on the long side and analysis paralysis can be a problem. Relatively difficult to teach since, at first, it appears there are a lot of rules to keep straight and it's difficult for the new person to see the impact of choices on subsequent turns. However, overall the game is very enjoyable. The unknown of uncovering treasure, the tight money management, the fight for Atlantis dominance, etc. all combine to make a nicely themed and competitive game.

Light, family-style tile & meeple laying game. A bit random given the low number of cards you have. Players vie for building "buildings" and placing meeples in tactical locations to gain intragame points. Some points are visible and others are hidden (silver and gold mines). Players build buildings and place meeples by laying cards that choose a row/column location of the item to be placed. Each player possesses a joker token and an extra turn token that can be used at opportune times and to get them back for subsequent turns you must place meeples near specific buildings that trigger the ability to reuse the tile. At times, figuring out how best to chain actions together and use your jokers can win the game. A bit more to it than a simple family game but not a gamers game either. Relatively abstract; the theme doesn't invoke western expansion at all.

Playing with the timer is a little strange. We like to just pick a puzzle and then just solve it using the board and tiles. We did modify the tiles somewhat by writing the numbers on the back using a red Sharpie Pen so that we could tell the difference between tiles that are 'fixed' and those placed while trying to solve the puzzle. The travel game is handy for long trips.

The magnetism angle is very unique and fun to play with but wow is it sensitive to table jiggling and in my 1920's house a kid running through throught the room jiggled the floor enough to trigger faults. Still, it is fun game that I would recommend to others.

Initially Ra didn't do much for me. For me, the enjoyment of this game depends more on the enjoyment of my opponents. That's of course true in a lot of games but it seems to matter more in Ra. It's a fast moving game and you do feel involved in the flow since your turn lasts such a short amount of time. If your opponents don't go into brain lock as to whether to call Ra or pull a tile, then you'll have fun. Otherwise... yuck.

We were shifting cards from the first to the second row and cards in the second row to the discard pile every phase rather than every round. Makes for a very weird experience. The second time was better but the end game seems pretty anticlimactic. Playing through the last trader phase seems like it would only make a difference if you can upgrade some of your duplicate orange/red cards. Does that happen much? The jury is still out and I need to play with more than just two.

Purchased Used. Received Oct 4, 2008 Tight mechanics, quick play, tense moments. I'm not much for auction games but this one doesn't feel like an auction. Instead, you get one chance at bidding for turn order. Then based on turn order you get to select a tile from the pool of available options. I like the "bribe" mechanic as well although I'm not one to mathematically analyze the merits of a bribe to the extent that I can see which choice (acceptance or payment) has more merit. To be a good player I think you'd have to be able to quickly do the math. I play, for the most part, by my gut making very high level estimations as to the pros/cons of a bribe. That's probably why I lose more than I win. However, it's still a fun game.

Received new Sept 15, 2007 Played twice. Will take awhile to explore and recognize two or three ply moves to victory and to recognize errors. Seems like there is some pretty deep play available for this surprisingly neat 2 player abstract. Very glad I spent the $30 USD (included shipping).

I think you're either wired biologically or not for this game...and I'm so so distinctly not. I don't think I'm physically capable of 'seeing' the Sets in anything remotely resembling an appropriate amount of time. Paint dries before I see a Set.

Arrived Nov 10, 2008 Played with 6 Great game with all open information. I'm usually not a fan of auction games but the Tree Frog line is really growing on me. I like that the auction is won with cubes and the number of cubes determine what you're capable of accomplishing in the round. The adjustment of turn order is very clever but the end game cube grab seemed little odd. More plays will help me determine if the disconnect is significant enough for me to adjust my rating. Right now...I'm liking what I'm seeing.

Received July 2008 Fast paced romp with multiple paths to victory. You can block the hell out of other players options during worker placement. Includes dice as a randomizer accomplishing the same need as that found in Thebes. As you do with knowledge when digging in Thebes, you work to increase your chances of success but putting more cavemen in an area and then roll the number of dice equal to the number of committed workers. Also, collecting and using "tools" can alleviate some of the pain of a bad rolls as they allow you to adjust the roll of the dice. Easy to learn (only three simple steps on each turn). Took a bit for some of the guys in my group to catch onto the iconography but in general it's pretty consistent and straightforward. Had to cut slots into the insert to lower the individual player boards which allows the box to close properly.

Ordered June 30, 2009 Arrived July 7, 2009 Goofy, light, tile grabbing game based on rolling dice up to three times while "locking" in dice. Simple to play, simple to teach, 15-20 minutes of "fun". More of an activity to pass the time than a strategic brain burner but packaged well for a light travel game in an informal setting.

For no good reason other than looks, and a healthy does of board game collector sickness, I finally found a copy of this game that was affordable. I will have trouble getting it to the table but I have that problem with many of the games I buy given I have three active buyers in my small gaming group. Purchased from an attendee at the Great Lakes Games Con in November 2009. It's in amazing condition. Even the wipe away pens still work.

Nice game. Looks great when finish. I enjoy the 'take that' aspects of crushing out other players settlements. Crushing out your own can be advantageous as well to open up opportunities for placing more towers and temples. Plays well with 2, 3, or 4 but it is a different game with 2. The game always ends when someone builds all of 2 of their components. I like the game most with 3 or 4. Not a heavy game but it is thinkier than it might first appear. Not Carcassonne-ish or Java-esque in any way.

I like this game a lot. It plays like Ticket to Ride but requires a bit more thought. There isn't much player interaction beyond decreasing what other players will score for different regions though. It is very difficult to catch up if you're behind near the end though.

A natural 'expansion' to the base game that comes with a new board and new cards. Minor rules adjustments as well. Instead of the coach cards you instead are allowed to 'discard' cards as horses that pull your coach. You cashed in route is limited each time by the number of horses pulling your coach. Solid play like the base game, easy to learn, quick to play. Low interaction.

I find the tension in the game excellent. The rules favor agressive play which makes it even more interesting. I prefer the artwork of the original Mayfair edition over the reprint. One of the few games that plays well across the entire spectrum of recommended players. The rules are little hard to grasp for new to moderate gamers. New players seem to have trouble remembering that they're not playing a color but instead a figure/dynasty-image. I've never had a problem determine internal from external conflict but that seems to be a tricky point with new players. Maybe it's the difference with how the payouts occur. Many, many paths to victory. Rarely is there not something advantageous to do on your turn.

Ordered November 16, 2009 Played multiple times during Great Lakes Games 2009 and had a blast. It's light, easy to teach, and fun. Player interaction is moderate without a lot of opportunity to screw your neighbor. Some of the card iconography takes a bit getting used to. It's common to not have enough cubes to indicate where a treasure lives early in its life depending on what card starts the row (e.g. Not on the beach) so get used to keeping track of where treasures are even when there are no cubes on the board to indicate it. Takes some mental gyrations and some spatial skills to see how your cards affect (reduce) the likely locations of the treasures.

Thin theme but who cares. The game is well balanced and plays very best with three. Can be very luck driven while hoping for the draw on that one action card you need to make it into the king's castle but still has some good strategic elements.

Received Feb 1, 2007 Only played a few times. Rules seem a little weak in spots. I enjoy the game but your turn ends up being mostly an exercise in optimizing chaos. Very little you can do to plan between turns. On your turn you evaluate the board, look at your cards, make a play, and take your lumps. Feels like something that would be funner against AI on a computer. At least you wouldn't have to wait so long between turns and it would keep the tiles in their correct positions in the ever expanding board.

Received in trade Sept 16, 2008 I was hoping for more from the game. We've always played with the additional 0-chip and with the "every horse head is unique" variants too. The randomness feels so dominant that there is little you can do to combat it. Don't get me wrong, there is a game there but nothing pulling me to play it over other title. I do like the horses though. Nice production quality. Prefer Long Shot - Up for trade. Box dent on one corner - came that way

Great trick taking game. Simple rules. Fast play. Plenty of the same 'arg!' factor found in other games like Rage! when you miss your bid. Unlike Rage you don't get any points for taking tricks when you miss your bid which feels a overly painful and overly rewarding the ones who do. The number of rounds composing a complete game seems a little large for this kind of game and we rarely play an entire game.
