I've been looking for a solution to provide an offsite storage drop for my data that I keep on my
NAS. I recently purchased a
FreeAgent Pro 750G external drive and tonight I configured the NAS's front-side 'backup' button to run two jobs for me. Now, when I plug in the USB drive and push the button, the NAS will automatically make a full backup of two of the RAIDed shares. I can then disconnect the drive and take it offsite. Periodically I'll bring back the drive for a fresh backup minimizing my loss due to fire or theft.
Setting up the drive was a snap and configuring the jobs through the NAS's web interface was ultra-simple. The USB 2.0 connection is not blindingly fast for bulk downloads but it seems to be chunking right along. For the simplicity of the setup, I'm very happy with the results.
