Over the weekend I got Noah interested in a series of books that I read many years ago. The Belgariad was one of my most loved series of books setting the stage for my love of Science Fiction/Fantasy. It's been many years since I read them but I described them as a coming of age story for a young 'wizard' set in a Lord of the Rings-ish environment with a bit of the animagus magic of Harry Potter thrown in for flavor.
I thought he was a little hesitant to start the first book but after the first day he's already on page 130 of 260 in the first book and has reserved the second book from the library. He doesn't want to put it down and he's devouring page after page. It's times like these that I love being a parent...

Keep in mind that my desire for the series is purely sentimental. If I reread them I might not think so highly of them. However, seeing him get sucked in so quickly is a real treat.
Despite the knock on Eddings' series as being rehashes and less than complex, as a youth, I too devoured everything he wrote. I especially enjoyed his two 3-book series about the Church Knights (the names escape me). The good news if he likes these is that that series essentially has 12 books to plow through - plenty to keep him going. If he manages all those and loves them, keep throwing Eddings his way.

I found The Riftwar Saga by Raymond Feist to be a much more enjoyable "boy learns magic" story.
