Old School

About two months ago I decided to go 'old school' with my lawn mower. Rather than pollute the air with my aged mower, rather than smelling like fumes after I'm done, and rather than dragging out the heavy mower every time, I purchased a 7-blade Sunlawn MM2 reel-mower from People Powered Machines.

I've mowed approximately 6 or 7 times since I've gotten it and I have to say it's more work than a powered mower. Although much lighter it's harder to push through heavy grass. It doesn't trim around planting beds as well (can't plant the wheel down in the mulch) and you have to mow over the same area in two different directions to get a good cut.

However, I won't stop using it and I'm still glad I bought it. Although it is more work and it does take a little bit more time to mow, I feel like it's time well spent given its low impact on the environment and I'm healthier for using it.

Coming up on two years since your August '07 picture of a reel mower was posted.

Do you still feel the same way about it? Also, what do you do about the areas around beds that it won't trim?

I'm interested in purchasing one of these myself, but I've heard that it might not be ideal for my yard (and my attitude toward mowing).

I've actually switched to an older used American brand reel mower that my wife's parents gave me. It's heavier and seems to cut much better than this "high tech" model. I was getting relatively frustrated with the model pictured since it would stall (blades would stop and the wheels would start skidding) relatively easily. The old clunker American only does that if I hit a stick or something really tough.

As far as around the beds, I cut the grass away from the beds in a 4-5 inch strip and mulch in that area. I then just run one wheel of the mower in that strip. For some areas I use a small electric, rechargeable string trimmer.

It's worked out well for me over the last couple of years and I really don't have a reason that I'd go back to a gas-powered mower. I got quite a few looks from neighbors the first year. Last year though, I noticed several being used in a 2 or 3 block radius from my house.
