I read Justice - by Larry Watson. Justice is the prequel to Montana - 1948. I admire Waton's writing style. He's very descriptive without being overly wordy. No text seems forced. No situation seems out of place. His stories seemingly flow from memories pulled from an almost forgotten distant past.
In Justice, we learn more about Wesley's father, Len McAuley, Wesley's brother Frank, and Wesley's mother Gail. Althought I enjoyed reading the book, the book is essentially plotless. Instead, it reads as a character study giving the reader insight into the people that inhabit the landscape where the story depicted in Montana 1948 takes place. In some ways, I might have enjoyed them more by reading them in chronological order. In either case, I highly recommend both books.
